Texas 2x2 and Texas Bluebonnet Award

This week Pre-K was learning about homes, so I read Welcome Home, Mouse.

For K-2, we talked about the Texas 2x2 list which is for children age 2 thru grade 2. In Kindergarten I read I Will Not Eat You. First grade heard the story of Horrible Bear and I read Dylan the Villain to Second grade.

For grades 3-5, I discussed the Texas Bluebonnet Award which is for grades 3-6. I read Follow the Moon Home.

Both lists are comprised of 20 books selected by teachers and librarians across the state of Texas. A student must read a minimum of 5 books for each list in order to vote for their favorite in January for the Texas Bluebonnet Award and February for the Texas 2x2 list. Each book that I read to the classes counts toward the minimum of 5 in order to vote. I have reading logs/tracking sheets available to anyone who would like one. I always look forward to seeing what book the students choose as their favorite for each list.

Library Orientation Scavenger Hunt

This week Pre-K learned about families, so I read Families, Families, Families! by Suzanne and Max Lang. Kindergarten was learning about following the rules and being a good citizen. I read Ten Rules You Absolutely Must Not Break if You Want to Survive the School Bus by John Grandits.

I did a library orientation scavenger hunt with the rest of the grade levels (1st – 5th). I had clues around the library that the students had to find. They worked in groups of three to locate the clues. Each team had an I pad so that they could take a picture of what the sign asked them to find. When the time was up or they had found all of the clues, they could bring me their I pad so that I could check the camera roll to see what they found. This was a fun way for the students to hopefully have a better understanding of where certain types of books are located in the library.

This is an example of the 1-2 clues.

Here is an example of the 3-5 clues.

Dot Day

Today was International Dot Day inspired by the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. We’ve been doing a Dot Day activity using the Quiver app all week with grades K-5. The app allows a two dimensional shape to appear three dimensional. The students were amazed when they saw their dots pop up off the screen. There was definitely a lot creativity going on in the library this week!
